Dick’s benefit of being a first mover

In Chapter 4 the book discusses a term about the advantages of being a “first mover”.  This term goes into detail about the advantages that a company has by making early development and technologically decisions early in the industry.

Dick’s Sporting Goods represents this by being the first big market corporation that sold elite and middle class goods to athletes.  Before they started expanding further than the northeast, there were only a few options for athletes to get high end quality sporting goods.

Now Academy Sporting Goods is trying to enter the market, but Dick’s has already made a name for itself.  The sales report shows that there is no competition between Dick’s and any other competitor.  This proves to show that making decisions early in a market, that is new in the area, can have a huge advantage.
